The Darcys of Pemberley by Shannon Winslow
Book review, an interesting continuation of Pride and Prejudice written in Jane Austen style.
The Darcys of Pemberley by Shannon Winslow, written in Jane Austen style and really enjoyable. Firstly this is a great read for fans of historical romance and an excellent continuation based on Pride and Prejudice. It’s twelve months on from Jane and Lizzy’s weddings. Elizabeth Bennett now Mrs Darcy and mistress of Pemberley. And Jane happily married to Mr Bingley.
The story centres around their lives with all the characters we love. But It begins with an unexpected death and I won’t spoil it by saying who.
Drama is brought into the story by Wickham, still hated by Darcy, Wickham seems to be more wicked as the book goes on. Lydia, his wife, is still the ditsy person we remember. Seeing no bad in her husband and blaming everyone else for their circumstances. Overstaying their welcome with the Bingleys suits them, they have all the luxury and no responsibility.
As the story unfolds we follow a couple of romances, Miss Georgiana Darcy now 18 gets a proposal of marriage, but not from the person she loves. We follow the tangle of lives, surprise engagements and unrequited love throughout the book.
When Georgiana fails to return from London and seems to be missing, a search party leaves Pemberley. As Elizabeth waits for news a distraught Wickham arrives, pleading for her help, telling her Lydia is injured.
No spoilers
It’s hard not to give spoilers, it’s a good story and plot, needless to say nothing is ever as Wickham says.
Darcy returns home with Georgiana to discover Wickham has taken Elizabeth. It’s a dramatic event and well written, and the story has been building to this from the beginning.
It portrays the consequences of keeping secrets from each other, even when it’s for good reasons. And the misunderstandings and assumptions that can arise from this. But like Pride and Prejudice there’s a happy ending, and the woman gets her man.
Although this is a stand alone book and does recap on who people are, I feel it will be much more enjoyable for a reader who has read or watched Pride and Prejudice.
